WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — While students get ready to return to the classroom next week, the Wausau School District is thinking ahead to the next school year.
Monday night the Wausau School Board was presented the draft of the Wausau School District’s 2021-2022 School Calander. The Board normally approves the calendar in early January but as District Coordinator of Communications & Marketing Diana White explains the process was slightly delayed this year.
“So what we’ve done is this calendar is essentially a roll-forward of the previous calendar. And part of the process and an important part of the process is looking at what area districts have for their calendars. However, because of the pandemic and maybe some other things, they just weren’t available until about the middle of January, end of January.”
Once the District had access to other calendars the calendar committee met to finalize the official dates. White says the District tried to mirror breaks as closely as possible with other surrounding districts. “We looked at their calendars, so D.C. Everest, which our calendar almost matches to a T to theirs.
“We also looked at Stevens Point and Merrill recognizing that a lot of our staff may live in those districts. So we wanted to be cognizant of our breaks in those areas as well. So while the start and end dates may differ between Stevens Point and Merrill a lot of the Thanksgiving, the Winter Break, the Spring Break, they align.”
Board Member Jeff Leigh also noted that the Wausau School District calendar breaks lines up with UWSP as well for the first time in several years. The other major feature of the calendar White explained to the board was that teachers will end the school year a few days later to keep the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and December 23rd as days off for everyone.
The 2021-2022 Wausau School Calendar was approved unanimously. The new school year will begin on September 1st of 2021 and end on June 3rd of 2022 for students while staff will end the year on June 6th.
