WASHINGTON D.C. (WSAU) – President Joe Biden is beginning to face increased concerns from top members of the Democratic Party as voters continue to make his mental fitness and age a top issue in the 2024 presidential election.
According to NBC’s Meet the Press moderator, Kristen Welker, some high-ranking Democrats “say there would actually be relief if [Biden] were to step down” and would replace him with Vice President Kamala Harris.
“One person said to me [that] everyone’s counting out Kamala Harris because right now her poll numbers are below President Biden’s, but if she were to be the one to carry this torch into November, there could be a method of reintroducing her to the country that could be effective with independents [and] with moderates,” Welker explained.
Welker’s inside reporting comes as CNN commentator and former Washington Post journalist Carl Bernstein told the network over the weekend that President Biden’s struggles on the debate stage were “not a one-off” and that Democrat sources have told him that “there have been 15, 20 occasions in the last year and a half when the president has appeared somewhat as he did in that horror show that we witnessed.”
“I think that what these folks are saying and have been saying for a while is, ‘Yes, he’s great when we see him, as we have tonight. But he also has these inexplicable moments that we’re very concerned about, and you, Ron Klain, and the First Family, we need to talk about this,” Bernstein further stated.
Recent polls have found that Biden’s national victory odds come November have shrunk since the debate with former President Trump, with the latest poll from CNN showing Trump now leading Biden by six percentage points and the former president also winning a possible matchup with Vice President Harris by two percentage points. Other notable post-debate polls include the latest USA Today/Suffolk poll showing Trump ahead of Biden by four percentage points, with only 29% of Democrat voters “very excited” to vote for Biden this fall, while the latest Harvard/Harris poll also shows Trump currently up seven percentage points over Biden, with RFK Jr. taking 15% of the vote.
