GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — Cellcom has confirmed that a cyber attack has led to an ongoing network outage.
CEO Brighid Riordan says the incident is “segmented to the voice and texting part of your service,” and does not impact personal data such as credit card or bank account information.
“We live in a world where they are working on how to do damage just as hard as we are working to prevent it,” said Riordan. “We have teams working around the clock. What I also want you to know is we have no evidence that [customers’] personal information was impacted.”
Riordan’s comments came in a YouTube video published Tuesday afternoon. She said the comments were unscripted and served as a “direct update” on the situation.
Riordan also said some details can’t be shared, while others are unknown. “We simply don’t have a lot of facts.”
An anticipated service restoration date has not been given. Riordan also released a letter to customers, saying they’ve involved the FBI and Wisconsin officials. The letter also noted that Cellcom will compensate customers for the downtime “and then some.”
Issues came to light last Thursday, including an inability to make or receive calls and text messages. Many customers have taken to social media to express frustration with the situation, saying it’s caused them to miss family connections, business opportunities, and in some cases, job interviews.
Representatives from Cellcom have previously said those stories fuel their desire to find a resolution. “Our teams are working through every barrier, day and night, because we know what’s at stake,” officials add.
