MADISON, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – New advisories on deer and fish consumption have been announced by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Health Services due to PFAS contamination in the Town of Stella and nearby waterbodies.
A “Do Not Eat” advisory has been issued for all fish species from the Moen Chain of Lakes, Sunset Lake, Starks Creek, and Snowden Lake. Testing revealed high levels of PFOS in fish tissue from these areas.
There is also new guidance for deer consumption within a 5-mile radius of the Town of Stella’s town hall. Officials recommend one meal per month of deer meat and advise against consuming deer liver.
The DNR and DHS found elevated PFAS levels in deer muscle and liver from samples collected within a 3-mile radius of the town hall, leading to the updated consumption advisories.
PFAS are human-made chemicals found in products like non-stick cookware and firefighting foams.
Consuming fish and wildlife with high PFAS levels can increase health risks, including cholesterol issues and decreased fertility.
