WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau mother accused of leaving her children at home alone to go to a nightclub has taken a plea deal.
Kassandra Meloy, 31, was in Marathon County Circut Court on Thursday, August 5th for a plea hearing. Meloy was facing charges of child neglect, possession of drug paraphernalia, and bail jumping in the case.
The charges stem from an August 2020 incident where a neighbor called police about a young boy in danger of falling out of a window with a broken screen. When police got to the apartment they found evidence of drug and alcohol use. During the police investigation, a friend of Meloy’s arrived to check on her children, the 3-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter. The friend told police that Meloy had left the children alone for about 4 hours to go to a club in Schofield.
At her plea hearing on August 5th, Meloy pled no contest to charges of neglecting a child and bail jumping. All other charges against Meloy were dismissed but read in by Marathon County Judge Gregory Strasser. With the plea deal, a sentence against Meloy for 3 years probation has been withheld. Meloy does face conditions like treatments deemed appropriate by her probation agent, no contact with her former boyfriend, Elton Carter, and paying all court costs.
