MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin Badger quarterback Graham Mertz will enter the NCAA transfer portal which opens today for 45 days.
He made the announcement on Twitter on Sunday.
New coach Luke Fickell said he had conversations with Mertz and his family and urged him to stick around to see how the changes go but the junior decided a change was for the best.
The decision leaves the Badgers with three quarterbacks on the roster for the bowl game. Chase Wolf, Myles Burkett and walk-on Marshall Howe.
The Badgers do have an oral commitment from Cole LaCrue a QB out of Colorado and he still plans to enroll in January.
It’s thought that Fickell and his staff will look for a quarterback through the transfer portal. Fickell is planning to coach the team in some capacity for the Dec 27th bowl game in Phoenix.
There are some reports from the weekend that Jim Leonhard is planning on returning as Badger defensive coordinator under Fickell.
