MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The high price of fuel has some Wisconsin families cutting back on their Memorial Day travel plans.
AAA estimates that 834,000 Wisconsinites will travel 50 miles or more for the unofficial start of summer, a slight decrease from the 835,500 who traveled in 2025.
“Memorial Day travel demand remains strong, but higher fuel prices are slowing the pace of growth in some segments,” said AAA Director of Public Affairs Nick Jarmusz in a press release. “Some Wisconsinites are taking a more measured approach this year by shortening trips, choosing closer destinations, or making other cost-conscious adjustments.”
Estimates show more than 744,000 are expected to travel by car. About 90,000 people are expected to travel by bus, train, or cruise ship.
National projections show about 39 million people will travel by car. The top domestic travel destination is Orlando, Florida, followed by Seattle and New York City. International travelers are most likely to end up in Rome, Vancouver, or Paris.
