Shawna Munguia
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau woman has pleaded no contest to an amended charge of physical abuse of a child for failure to prevent great bodily harm, after a child was injured while under her care.
Shawna Munguia entered the plea on Tuesday as part of a deal with the state. The 36-year-old had been facing a felony count for child abuse- causing great bodily harm, which would have come with up to 15 years in the state prison system.
She was arrested in May 2025 after investigators determined that a child she was caring for had suffered serious injuries. Police were notified of the incident after a doctor notified police of an infant showing signs of significant brain trauma. She initially told investigators that another child may have fallen on the infant, but later said she “might have probably shaken” the child out of frustration.
Doctors determined that the child’s injuries were consistent with abusive trauma. The child was eventually released from the hospital.
Munguia was found guilty by a judge and will now undergo a presentence investigation. Sentencing has been scheduled for August 5th at 9 AM.
