MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) — An extension of takeoff and landing restrictions at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport has delayed United Airlines’ return to CWA.
The US Department of Transportation will continue to limit traffic at the international hub to 2,708 takeoffs and landings through October 2027. The restriction was originally put in place to reduce congestion and the risk of delays or cancellations at the busy hub. The extension allows the airport to complete a terminal construction project, which is expected to last through next fall.
A statement posted to the Central Wisconsin Airport’s website notes that the decision does not mean United has lost faith in the market. “While this is certainly disappointing news, United has reaffirmed its commitment to serving CWA and continues to view our region as an important market,” the statement reads.
Airport officials emphasize that the move is the result of “operational limitations” at O’Hare.
The airport’s website acknowledged that United will be returning in November 2027.

United announced a return to CWA in October 2025, after discontinuing service in 2022 due to a pilot shortage. Flights were initially scheduled to return on May 21st.
A handful of other Midwestern markets will also have to wait for expanded service from United. Those include Rochester, Minnesota; Marquette, Lansing, and Kalamazoo, Michigan; and La Crosse.
