Wisconsin Badgers
MADISON, WI (WSAU) – An official cause of death has been revealed for a former Badgers tight end.
According to a report from the Franklin County (Ohio) Coroner’s Office obtained by People, former University of Wisconsin tight end Jack Pugh, who died at the age of 24 in March, died of acute bronchopneumonia, which is known to be deadly in young children, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems.
Pugh played for the Badgers for two seasons before leaving in 2023 to focus on his mental health. The coroner’s office determined that Pugh’s infection was worsened by cardiomyopathy and hepatosplenomegaly, both of which impact the heart and liver.
In March, UW-Madison released a statement praising Pugh, saying, “Jack was a positive light and brought a genuine spirit to our football program. More than that, he cared about people and was loved by his teammates and staff. Jack proudly earned his degree from UW-Madison in 2025 and will forever be remembered and loved.”
