MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) — The US Department of Transportation has awarded Central Wisconsin Airport nearly $1 million to help restore service to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).
The $950,000 grant will help advance one of the airport’s highest priorities, according to a press release. Airport Director Brian Grefe says Detroit represents “a crucial next step in expanding our network, particularly for travelers heading east, and would be a significant move toward making CWA the airport of choice for our region.”
Direct flights to DTW would offer travelers more domestic connections and several international destinations, including Tokyo, Amsterdam, Seoul, Frankfurt, and Toronto.
Delta discontinued the CWA to Detroit route in late 2022 amid a pilot shortage and other infrastructure challenges.
The grant comes from the Small Community Air Service Development Program (SCASDP). Airport officials will still need to work with airlines and the Department of Transportation to complete the grant process. It’s unclear when the flights will return.
