Javarius Hurd
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — The homicide trial against 18-year-old Javarius Hurd will soon be in the hands of the jury.
Court records show both the state and defense rested on Monday, with the state closing its arguments just before 10:00 AM. Hurd’s defense team then called an expert witness before the court called a lunch break.
After the break, the defense called just one additional witness, then confirmed that Hurd would not testify. After 3:00 PM, the jury was excused as both sides made final adjustments to the jury instructions.
Jurors returned to the courtroom at about 4:00 PM and were instructed to return Tuesday morning for closing arguments.
Hurd is accused of reckless homicide in the death of Lincoln Hills Correctional Officer Corey Proulx, who died after a confrontation at the facility in 2024. Prosecutors say Hurd had just attacked another correctional officer by throwing a cup of soapy water in her face. Proulx then chased Hurd into an outdoor recreation area, where he hit his head on a hard surface. Investigators say the fall came after the then-16-year-old attacked Proulx.
The trial is scheduled to run through Friday.
