MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — A group of eight Wausau Police officers served on the security team for what’s believed to be the largest single-day event in the state’s history.
The group was tasked with monitoring part of the parade route, according to a department Facebook post. “They were honored to be a part of the historic day and help our state celebrate this occasion safely,” the post read.
Milwaukee Police estimate that 750,000 people attended the parade and rally in the Henry Maier Festival Park. The crowd exceeded Milwaukee’s population of roughly 560,000 and accounted for nearly 13% of Wisconsin’s population.
Those estimates show the event was the largest single-day crowd in state history. For comparison, the NFL Draft in Green Bay drew an estimated 600,000 people over three days and 362,500 unique visitors. The first number would double- or triple-count those who attended multiple days.
Milwaukee defeated Tampa Bay 4-1 to claim the first World Series title in franchise history and the second in city history. The Milwaukee Braves defeated the New York Yankees 4-3 to claim the 1957 title.
