TOWN OF DAY, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — A 29-year-old man was arrested Thursday after authorities found dead dogs and emaciated dogs at his home on Folz Road.
Joseph Carey is facing eight counts of felony mistreating animals causing death and 10 counts of misdemeanor mistreating animals, according to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office. He also faces additional charges for failure to provide sanitary conditions, food, and water.
The Sheriff’s Office Animal Investigation Unit began investigating after deputies visited Carey’s residence on Apr. 25 after they received a tip about multiple deceased and malnourished dogs on his property. All the dogs were the same breed.
The 10 surviving dogs, along with two of the deceased dogs, were taken to the Marathon County Humane Society for evaluation and examination.
Carey is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Friday afternoon.
