WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The man accused of tailgating a vehicle along US Highway 51 in northern Marathon County, then shooting at the family inside, has new trial dates.
Bennie Green of Troy is now scheduled for a week-long trial from October 12th to the 16th, roughly three years after the incident. The 43-year-old is accused of tailgating the second vehicle, passing it, then slowing down again as the two were northbound on the highway between Wausau and Merrill.
Green is then accused of driving alongside the vehicle and firing two rounds into it, injuring one of the occupants. He then led law enforcement on a high-speed chase that extended back into Wausau, where he was arrested after a Lincoln County deputy disabled his vehicle.
One of the people in the second vehicle was hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries.
He faces multiple felony charges, the most serious being attempted homicide. Additional counts include recklessly endangering safety, OWI causing injury, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and fleeing an officer. Misdemeanor OWI and a forfeiture for discharging a firearm from a vehicle are also on the docket.
Green previously indicated he would represent himself at trial with a standby attorney, but court records show he has now been assigned a public defender. He is being held in the Marathon County Jail on a $75,000 cash bond. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 28th.
