MADISON, WI (WSAU) – Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has signed an executive order requiring flags to be flown at half-staff across the state on Thursday in honor of Hmong-Lao Veterans Day.
According to a press release from the governor’s office, Evers praised the Hmong-Lao community for their military service during the Vietnam War, stating, “Through their service and sacrifice, our Hmong-Lao veteran community has earned every honor and respect we can give them by serving this nation during the Vietnam War and in many conflicts since, and for that, we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude.”
“Here in Wisconsin, we are committed to our promise to protect, defend, and support the veterans who’ve protected, defended, and supported us, and that includes our Hmong-Lao heroes,” Gov. Evers continued.
Wisconsin officially declared May 14th to be Hmong-Lao Veterans Day in 2021. However, Hmong-Lao veterans have not received federal veteran status or benefits as a result of state recognition.
