GREEN BAY, WI – The Green Bay Packers are reportedly expecting to start the season without their top pass rusher.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Micah Parsons is “a candidate to be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform List” to start the season, as he continues to recover from his torn ACL.
Parsons previously told reporters in January that he expects to return to action in either week 3 or 4, which is rumored to be against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football at home or on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, any player who begins the season on the PUP list must sit out a minimum of four games, so Parsons’ most likely return will be week 5 against the Chicago Bears at Green Bay.
Before suffering the injury, Parsons was playing at an elite level for Green Bay, recording 12.5 sacks, 19 tackles, and forcing two fumbles.
In an interview last week with the Action Network, Parsons spoke about working with new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, saying, “I’m extremely excited about what JG is going to bring to the team. I talked to a lot of his former players. They all have pretty rave reviews about him. I’m just excited to work with another DC and hopefully go to the championship.”
Gannon also spoke about his plan for the Packers’ new-look defense during his introductory press conference, saying he wants his defense to be a “fast, violent, physical team that takes the ball away” and that Parsons is “obviously a piece we’re going to be mindful of when we’re putting together the scheme, especially when you get to game planning.”
