MADISON, WI (WSAU) A bill that would have spent-down about two-thirds of the state surplus on a combination of tax rebates and school funding failed in the state senate, 15-18 last night. The compromise proposal between Governor Tony Evers and GOP leaders in the legislature is dead.
Several candidates for governor were opposed to the compromise. Republican Tom Tiffany said that one-time tax rebates of $300 were too small. Several Democrats running for governor wanted more money for school aid. The bill would have increased school funding, with the state covering half of special education costs by the end of 2027.
The agreement had been negotiated by lame duck leaders. Assembly speaker Robin Vos, senate majority leader Devin LeMahieu and Tony Evers are all not running for reelection.
The measure had passed in the state assembly, 61-32, before failing in the state senate.
