WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — An alert letter carrier helped save a Wausau family after their garage went up in smoke on Wednesday.
Fire crews were called to the home on Ross Avenue at about 3:30 PM to find that the fire had already spread from the garage into the home, and that heat and fire damage had extended to a pair of nearby buildings.
Crews initiated an internal attack on the fire in the building, including the home’s attic, while protecting nearby structures. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.
The family was home at the time of the fire but managed to get outside after a USPS letter carrier notified them of the flames. “The Wausau Fire Department would like to recognize the actions of the postal carrier, whose quick thinking and prompt notification allowed the occupants to evacuate safely,” officials said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. While handling the Ross Avenue incident, crews were also called to a second fire at another location in the city. “Without hesitation, firefighters ensured both incidents were handled safely and effectively. Today’s response is a testament to the dedication of the men and women of the Wausau Fire Department,” said Deputy Chief Justin Pluess in a press release.
