MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – The Milwaukee Brewers and one of their top prospects have agreed on a long-term deal.
According to Brewers media source Spencer Michaelis and ESPN insider Jeff Passan, Milwaukee and its fifth-ranked prospect, Luis Lara, have agreed to a seven-year contract worth up to $79 million and $31 million guaranteed, with incentives and escalators, including three club options from 2033 to 2035.
Lara, a 21-year-old outfielder from Venezuela, has been on fire at the plate this season, and AAA-Nashville now leads the league with a .338 batting average, seven home runs, 27 RBIs, and a career-low strikeout rate at just 12.8%
This agreement comes after Lara has been a healthy scratch from the Sounds’ lineup in recent games, leading many to believe that he will be signed and brought up to the major leagues in the coming days.
Milwaukee also agreed to an eight-year, $50.75 million deal agreement with Lara’s Nashville teammate and top prospect, Cooper Pratt, in April, providing the franchise with long-term flexibility with two of its biggest names in the farm system.
Milwaukee currently has the top-ranked farm system in the majors, led by 19-year-old infielder and top overall prospect Jesus Made, who is expected to receive a similar extension to Pratt and Lara next spring, and fellow 19-year-old infielder Luis Pena, who is currently playing with the Brewers’ High-A affiliate in Appleton and is expected to be called up to AA-Biloxi this summer.
