John Shulfer
STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A Portage County man facing homicide charges for killing his parents in July 2025 has entered a not guilty plea and will go to trial next spring.
John Shulfer entered the plea late Tuesday afternoon, roughly one month after he was deemed competent for trial. A judge then set a two-week trial to begin on Monday, March 29th, 2027.
Shulfer is accused of shooting Paula and Dale Shulfer in their rural Portage County home. When officers arrived at the scene, he was still holding a firearm and refused commands to drop it. Officers shot him, a use of force that was justified according to an external investigation.
The 36-year-old was hospitalized for his injuries and released. Formal charges were filed following his release.
Additional charges against him include two counts of causing mental harm to a child and three counts for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The homicide charges alone carry a mandatory life sentence if he’s found guilty at trial.
A motion hearing is scheduled for January 12th. A jury status hearing is scheduled for March 4th. Shulfer is being held on a two million dollar cash bond.
