ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU) — A few years after merging their Police departments, residents of Weston and Rothschild will finance a new building for the combined force.
Rothschild Administrator Ryan VanDeWalle says the new building will provide the department with adequate room for current and future operations. “[The current building] was really meant for a much smaller department,” said VanDeWalle. “They are functioning out of it as best as they can.”
As the area grows, so have calls for service. VanDeWalle says they don’t see that slowing down anytime soon. “We are seeing [new] subdivisions in our area, so we are adding more residents and therefore more need on our first responders.
“We all are thinking this department may get larger in the future,” he added.

Borrowing for the project is expected to add about .17 cents to the mill rate, meaning a $300,000 home would see an extra $54 per year on its tax bill.
Rothschild is paying for 35% of the projected $7 million cost. Weston will pay for the remaining 65%. It’s unclear what that will mean for those taxpayers, as leaders are still calculating the impact of closing TID #1.
