(UWSP Athletics) – EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (2-2, 0-1) trailed early in an eventual 31-9 loss at UW-Eau Claire (4-0, 1-0) in the conference opener for both teams.
Ryan Thompson (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) completed 24 of 38 passes for 221 yards. Zack Lynch (Brussels. Wis./Southern Door) led UWSP with six catches and he had a team-high 27 rushing yards.
Defensively, Paul Morris (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) had a team-high nine tackles and one QB hurry. Charlie Anderson (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) and Gavin Adams (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) had eight tackles each.
The Blugolds took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards on nine plays to put UWSP in a 7-0 hole. UWEC took its next drive to the endzone for a 14-0 score. On UWSP’s next offensive play, a fumble was scooped up and returned for a touchdown as the Pointers trailed 21-0 before the end of the first quarter.
UWSP took the ensuing drive and moved to the UWEC 34 by the end of the quarter. The drive stalled early in the second quarter and Tyler Sodemann (Waukesha, Wis./West) kicked a 49-yard field goal to get UWSP on the board.
Peyton Schwahn (Reedsville, Wis./Reedsville) recovered a UWEC fumble on the next offensive play and Sodemann kicked another field goal to make it 21-6.
The Pointers took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 61 yards to the UWEC 11. Sodemann again kicked a field goal as UWSP got within 21-9.
The Pointers defense turned away the Blugolds on the next drive. UWEC got to the UWSP 7 and the defense held on three-straight rushes to turn the ball over on downs.
UWEC tacked on 10 points in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
The Pointers will host UW-Stout Polytechnic on Saturday (Oct. 10) at 1:00 p.m. It will be Homecoming and the annual Spud Bowl.
