(UWSP Atheletics) STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (2-3, 0-2) fell to UW-Stout Polytechnic (3-2, 1-1) by a 48-2 final on Saturday.
Noah Joseph (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) had a safety in the fourth quarter as the Pointers avoided being shut out. Josh Kristof (Lena, Wis./Lena) led the Pointers’ defense with 10 tackles. Luke Hildebrandt (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian) had a sack and 2.5 tackles for loss.
Joseph Cheatham (Brookfield, Wis./East) and Ryan Thompson (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) combined for 13 completions for 128 yards. Zack Lynch (Brussels. Wis./Southern Door) had a team-high 52 rushing yards. Brayden Wiczek (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union) caught six passes for 74 yards.
The Blue Devils took the opening kickoff and went 75 yards in 13 plays for a 7-0 lead. UWS scored on each of their next two drives and UWSP trailed 21-0 at the end of the first.
UWSP’s defense held the Blue Devils to a field goal on the first drive of the second quarter.
On the next drive, the Pointers converted on two fourth-down attempts and reached the Stout 28. A sack of the third fourth-down try turned the ball over on downs. The Blue Devils took the ensuing drive to the end zone to make it 31-0.
On the final play of the first half, Thompson heaved a hail mary that was intercepted at the one-yard line. Three laterals later and the Blue Devils had a pick-six to put UWSP behind, 38-0 at the break.
The Blue Devils scored on their first drive of the third quarter and it was 45-0. The Pointers forced a punt on Stout’s next drive, but it was downed on the one.
In the fourth quarter, UWSP punter Dakota Stroud (Manawa, Wis./Manawa) angled a punt out of bounds at the Stout one. Joseph hauled down the running back in the end zone for a safety.
UWSP will travel to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Oct. 17) for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
